Description

I have seen a lot of entries done in Photoshop and other computer software. I wanted to get back to the basics. I believe that black and white brings out the true essence of opposites.

The leaves are the decisions that we make. They are split down the middle. Some are good in intent and some are meant to cause harm. Normally, angel wings are used to represent the "good" side. Here I am making a statement about how some thing that is considered good by the majority of society can really be evil at the root of its purpose. On the other side, the white wing of a bat, a creature that is often misunderstood, has a simple and true life.

Thanks for looking! :3 (This took me forever!)

Firstly, it's really nice to see a graphite work from you. As you are aware, it's my preferred method of drawing.

I'm glad you wrote an indepth description of this because without it I wouldn't really know what it meant. You description covers all the bases and I think this piece is a welcome addition to the contest. It's different to most of the others and that alone stands it apart in a good way.

You really do have a range of skills when it comes to art. You have a great understanding of proportion, depth, tones and lighting, all of which feature in this piece and have been executed with great skill.

The little dtails draw one into the picture almost like viwing a landscape with many different things going on. It's not too much though. It's just enough to keep my eyes wandering into the various details aswell as drawing them back to the main subject matter.

I'm curious as to what size this paper is as it seems as if it isn't a huge drawing. Also, it seems that the paper is textured which adds yet another dimension to this. It gives it a kind of roughness which suits the subject matter. It particularly suits the background elements. However, I can't help thinking that a smoother paper would of allowed for smoother shading on the skin, wing and leaves whilst you could still have made the background have a rougher look by doing a different technique with the blending. Of course, all of this may be down to the scan itself but I always think skin, when shaded smooth can also add another dimension to a piece and bring it a little bit more alive.

I really like how the face seems sad and sorrowful (intentional or not), almost fighting with emotion and itself.

I think your vision for this is great but not sure whether you quite achieved what you were going for although from your description, you did.

It is definitely original.

The technique is well executed but do feel a smooth paper or a Vellum (slightly textured paper) would have been better, particularly for the skin.

It does have impact but without your description it wouldn't impact on me quite so much. Your description helped me understand what it was about which then caused me to think more about the various things in the picture and delve deeper into looking at it.
